Fossil fuel heating systems work by creating heat by burning fuel - a very simple technology that's served us well for many years. What we can't ignore however, is the inefficiency of fossil fuel heating relative to other technology out there.
A heat pump works by drawing heat from either the air or ground and bringing that warmth inside your home. This technology uses much less energy and is therefore more efficient.
Given this efficiency and less reliance of fossil fuels, customers can now upgrade their heating system to a heat pump with the UK Government Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This scheme allows for up to £7,500 in funding for removing a fossil fuel boiler and replacing it with a heat pump or biomass boiler.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is the government department reponsible for handling the multi-billion pound fund for installing air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and biomass boilers.
These funds are available to anyone in England and Wales who passes some simple eligibility checks and owns a home which meets the funding criteria.
Over 43,000 Air Source Heat Pump funding vouchers have been issued in the UK so far with a huge amount of boiler upgrade scheme funding still available.

The Boiler Upgrade Sheme is classed as "installer-led", meaning that the installer of the low-carbon heating technology will submit a voucher application for a funding grant on behalf of the property owner.
Your installer will perform some eligibility checks to ensure that any voucher applications will meet the necsssary criteria. Once the application for a voucher is made, Ofgem will ask the property owner to confirm eligibility and that the installer is acting on their behalf.
Your installer will work with you to confirm what work is to be completed and arrange removal of your existing fossil-fuel heating system before installing a low-carbon heating option. This will be completed based on the terms and schedule issued by your installer.
Once the installer has completed the installation, they will submit a voucher redemption application. If approved, the grant will be paid to the installer - the price paid by the proprty owner will be the cost minus the grant amount.

For a suitable home, upgrading your fossil-fuel heating system to an Air Source Heat Pump is worth the effort - especially for long term environmental and efficiency reasons.
Heat pumps will keep your home comfortably warm even below 0°C (Until around -20°C). The advantages of an air-source heat pump are that you get efficient eheating with low emissions, low maintenance and it delivers up to four times more energy than it consumes.
